Last weekend we braved the elements of Moosehead Lake, a fantastically rural area in Maine's northwest forests. This was Chris's first camping experience, and to say that he was less that eager would be an understatement. But I think with some roast chicken, a few beers, and some very thick padding under his sleeping bag we have convinced him that it's not so bad after all.
The next morning we woke up (way too early), had turkey bacon and bagels, and filled up 7 gallons of water for our hike. The 9 mile Gulf Hagas trail was complete with waterfalls, steep climbs, and bountiful views. By the half way point we were out of water, and the team morale was low. Alas, peanut butter and fluff sandwiches to the rescue! This was my first experience, and I tell you, my friends, it most certainly will not be the last.
Fortunately, the final few miles offered some reprieve from the incline and the scorching sun. We finished the hike in 6 hours, toppled into "Jerome the Jeep," and started the trek back to WAH-tah-ville. Luckily, as we were near death, we found a subway to seek provisions. Armed with our footlongs and fountain drinks, we proudly congratulated each other as we had survived 1.5 days in the wild.
Below are some pictures of our journey. I expect no judgement on the attire or general state of sweatiness. Remember, we were near death.
